Staff Profile
My name is Felicia Oamen. I work as a lecturer in the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Abuja. I hold PhD and MA degrees from the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. In addition, I hold a BA (English) degree from the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos. My research interest is in the critical study of discourse and power. Thus, I apply insights from Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), Pragmatics and Social Semiotics to the study of language of politics, media, gender and visual communication. Recently, my work has also focused on the study of identity politics and other forms of discrimination in migration discourse. Some of my articles on political and media discourse have been published in Discourse and Society, Social Semiotics and The Discourse of Digital Civic Engagement: Perspectives from the Developing World. I have also participated in course material development for NOUN. The courses include ENG 852 (Advanced Discourse Analysis) and ENG 851 (Bilingualism and Multilingualism). In addition, I have been facilitating GST 101 (Use of English and Communication Skills I), ENG 151 (Introduction to English as a Second Language), ENG 352 (Discourse Analysis) and ENG 432 (Pragmatics) since 2018.
